* Festival on hiatus

"We want you to know we have heard your voices as community and the 10,000 Lakes Festival wants to deeply thank all of our fans, artists and attendees for seven amazing years at Soo Pass Ranch. While 10,000 Lakes will be on hiatus for 2010, we believe that the music never stops. It can't, you make it possible.

The organizers of 10KLF love our ardent fans and we will do our best to keep the music coming. W e will strive for better days ahead. We will certainly notify you when Rose Presents promotes like-minded events."—Statement by festival

Anybody in the Midwest wondering where all the festival jamming went in the aftermath of Bonnaroo's recent transition to more accessible, MTV-ish programming should wonder no more. With Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic and Wilco topping the bill this year, 10 KLF is more than ever the convenient paradise for jam fans of the Heartland that feel that they shouldn't have to venture out west to Wakarusa or High Sierra to get what 'Roo once offered and now spurns, to a significant degree. With great camping throughout the festival grounds, support for local musical programs and many chances to get involved with strong charity causes having a regional and national reach, 10,000 Lakes is one of the last big festivals in the U.S. that still sticks to its historical programming guns and doesn't rely on Fortune 500 sponsorship.

Charity Partners

From the Dead's own Rex Foundation, which has given $7 million so far to support projects in the arts and education, to HeadCount, a non-profit established to get out the vote of live music fans across the U.S., 10 KLF gives its fans a chance to help numerous political, cultural and environmental causes just by typing in a quick addition to their ticket price while buying tickets. All of the proceeds from such donations will go to one of the five charity partners of the festival.

Instrument Fund

Even without a voluntary donation from fans, part of every ticket to 10,000 Lakes 2008 will be donated to the five organizations cited above as well as the Detroit Lakes Public School District. The School District will use the donations to develop a self-sustaining music program, with a complete inventory of instruments for the multiple bands within the elementary, middle, and high schools which it oversees.

Camping

Those pitching their tents at 10,000 Lakes's VIP Campground might have an advantage of location, but the surroundings found at the festival's four non-VIP sites—Northwoods, Lake Sallie and Viking/Blue Ox—are simply stunning. All have permanent shower and bathroom facilities and a general store handy, and Lake Sallie and Viking/Blue Ox even has its own acoustic stage.

Even though there won't be a big rock festival at the Soo Ranch in Detroit Lakes MN this year, the venue's much larger and longer running country festival continues strong in 2010. Known for its stellar lineups among other attractions, WE Fest surely does not disappoint with as good a list of country stars as you could imagine.

It starts with the previously announced headline trio of Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and Kid Rock. The rest of the list of national touring acts that will be appearing was announced, and country fans will be delighted: Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean, Montgomery Gentry, Gloriana, Gretchen Wilson, and Blake Shelton top the list.

WE Fest returns for its 28th year August 5-7 in the northwestern Minnesota community where is has become an important piece of the local economy, especially so after the festival partners decided to cancel the 10,000 Lakes Festival for 2010 and probably future years.

Amidst this season's cautious optimism over festival economics comes the first serious bad news for the industry as Rose Presents of Minneapolis announced that its 10,000 Lakes Festival will not be produced in 2010 and is on indefinite hiatus.

The festival has run in late July at Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes MN for seven years and had attracted a faithful and enthusiastic audience for its ambitious lineups of mostly jam and some alternative rock. Last year for the 7th annual 10KLF, the festival presented Widespread Panic, Wilco and the Dave Matthews Band as headliners.

But having a core fan group was not enough for Rose and its partners to turn the festival into a successful business venture. A notice addressed to fans from promoter Rand Levy was posted at the festival website on December 18. It reads:

"We want you to know we have heard your voices as community and the 10,000 Lakes Festival wants to deeply thank all of our fans, artists and attendees for seven amazing years at Soo Pass Ranch. While 10,000 Lakes will be on hiatus for 2010, we believe that the music never stops. It can't, you make it possible.
