"Originally created as a pure EDM (electronic dance music) festival in 1999, Ultra has grown through the years to present not only the world’s hottest, biggest and best headline EDM artists (The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Tiesto, Underworld, MOBY, Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk, David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, Erick Morillo, Deadmau5 and Paul Oakenfold, to name a few), but also crossover headline bands that incorporate EDM elements in their music and have a history, or new beginning in the EDM community and culture (The Cure, The Killers, The Black Eyed Peas, Bloc Party, The Bravery). UMF expanded to a two-day festival in 2007 and now boasts 16 stages set over both days featuring more than 250 bands, DJs, artists, and producers. Every EDM genre and sub genre is represented at Ultra (house, trance, electro, indie-rock, dance rock, techno, drum & bass, breakbeat, alternative, minimal, big beat, jamtronica and more)." UMF Miami 2009 set a new record with more than 85,000 party people in attendance over two days, coming to Ultra from 56 countries and all 50 states.—Description by festival

With Ultra Music Festival only a few weeks away, things are coming into the home stretch, and that means time for the Phase 3 announcement for the lineup. This by far has been the most underwhelming revelation of the bunch.

Somewhere Ultra has forgotten its an electronic music festival. While we applaud the effort to incorporate a more broad scope, some additions are perplexing. Phase 2 announcement of Damien Marley and Nas is perhaps the oddest booking, but at least they are respectable musicians. When you go booking LMFAO, you must be all kinds of desperate.

Where are the showstoppers? Past years The Cure, The Prodigy, Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, and more were quality headliners. Sorry to say this, but this is perhaps the most disappointing lineup in the festival's history.

The big picture story at Ultra Music Festival 2010 is the continued broadening of the lineup beyond pure electronica, as highlighted in the phase two announcement by the addition of reggae-rap collaborators Damian Marley and Nas, but that is within the context of Ultra's core mission to be the world's biggest and best dance-music extravaganza.

Despite the presence of acts such of  The Disco Biscuits, Will.i.am, The Crystal Method, Ghostland Observatory and others, the overall lineup and top headliner spots are heavily weighted to the festival's electronica core.

Ultra Music Festival, which runs March 26-27 in Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami, is being promoted as the first major music festival of the 2010 season. Visit FP's Ultra Music Festival page to sample all the artists.

Of the round two additions, top billing goes to French house-music DJ David Guetta and British electronic duo Orbital, joining previously announced DJ Tiesto, trance master Deadmau5 and three-way mix masters Swedish House Mafia as the festival headliners.

Headliners: Deadmau5, Tiesto

Notables: Armin van Buren, The Crystal Method, Infected Mushroom, Passion Pit, Bassnectar, Will.i.am, Faithless Sound System, Eric Prydz, Ghostland Observatory, Carl Cox, Groove Armada, Swedish House Mafia, The Disco Biscuits

Comment: More crossover this year from pure electronica to alternative rock. Not sure where there's room for Phase 2.
