Big-time venture capitalist and fantasy banjo picker Warren Hellman brings back Hardly Strictly Bluegrass for the eighth time—God bless him. Golden Gate Park was famous for free concerts in the '60s, but that was then, this is now. Saturday and Sunday has six stages presenting top roots artists nonstop from noon to about 7 pm. Friday runs a partial program on just two stages. The problem for attendees at HSB is in deciding how to plan their day, especially biting the bullet on which acts to miss. Best transport is city buses; come early if you hope to find street parking. Besides food booths, don't look for a lot of diversions at this festival—the main attraction is the music. And if you're into Americana music, there's no better lineup of artists to be seen at any festival.
